Althought the streets of Leeds might not be affected when you move out of halls of residence, there are still lots of things you can do to make sure you recycle properly, get your full deposit back, and prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft!
1. Use the recycling bins.
Put in clean tins and cans, non-confidential paper, magazines and card, and plastic bottles and bags, and use your nearest glass recycling point.
2. Shred old confidential paperwork.
Identity theft is a real problem that can be made worse during the rush to pack up, when people forget to tear up their confidential letters when recycling. Stop this from happening to you by bringing anything containing your name, address or bank details to Leeds University Union reception, on the first floor by the photocopier to use a shredder, or to Leeds Met Students' Union from Monday 10th May.
3. Use the Union drop off point.
Bring dead batteries, old printer cartridges, clean tetrapak juice cartons and all the plastic bags you have been saving up all year to the drop off point at Leeds University Union from Monday 10th May and we will recycle them properly for you. We will also be collecting old mobile phones at the drop off point. Alternatively, you can do this yourself at
www.leedsuniversityunion.envirostudents.com (doing it this way also makes a donation to the Volunteering and Community Office).
4. Don't leave it until the last minute to get rid of all of your non-reusable rubbish.
Otherwise, your halls will be left flooded with rubbish.
5. Give reusable stuff you don’t want to Green Streets.
Green Streets, a student-run volunteer project, will be collecting any reusable unwanted items that you have to then sort and redistribute them in free shops and to charities. Look out for Green Streets bins in your halls from Tuesday 4th May, in or near the site office.
6. Help out! Volunteer with Green Streets.
Green Streets are always looking for volunteers to drive the vans for collections, help with collecting and sorting items and setting up free shops. If you have sorted out your packing and clearing, and have some time spare this summer, email
leaveleedstidy@luu.leeds.ac.uk to help.
