There are loads of different ways to get rid of your rubbish. You could use one of the Leeds City Council services, or you could go green and recycle your items or donate them to a charity. Here are some links to services that can help you with your rubbish.
Extra Services
Leeds City Council will be providing extra street cleaning services to collect your waste. However, you will need to know what day your rubbish is going to be collected in order to leave your bin out. There will also be extra bulky collection vehicles for items like sofas and tvs. For more information please log on to www.leeds.gov.uk/waste.
Caged waste collection vehicles will also be in the area over the weekend of 28th and 29th June. Look out for these vehicles, which will be decorated with banners encouraging you to stop them and give them your rubbish.
There will be 12 large skips with Leave Leeds Tidy banners on located in the main areas of Headingley and Hyde Park and Woodhouse for the duration of the student changeover period (23rd to 30th June). Please dispose of any extra waste or large items in these skips and do not leave them on the streets. Please also take any large extra items to a household waste sorting site. To find out where your nearest site is please go to www.leeds.gov.uk/waste.
In terms of recycling Leeds City Council collects any excess recyclable waste at the same time as your green wheeled bin as long as it is loose in transparent bags. Please make sure any excess recyclable waste is placed in a plastic bag, do not use a black bag because this will not be collected. Please make sure that you are careful not to recycle anything with personal details on it, unless it has been made unreadable first.
Use the menu on the side of this page to find out more about what's on offer.
Information For Students
As a tenant you are responsible for making sure all your household waste is disposed of properly and legally. Everyone living in the house is responsible for the bins. This includes putting the correct waste in the bins, putting them out for collection and returning them back to your property after they have been emptied.
Leeds City Council enforcement officers patrol the streets daily to check if bins are being put back into gardens. If bins are repeatedly left on the street everyone living in your house could be issued with an £100 fine each.
Letting agencies and landlords work in partnership with Leeds City Council to report their tenants who commit any of the environmental crimes mentioned above. Please remember to be a good neighbour by keeping your street and garden clean and tidy.
Information for Landlords
Landlords have a responsibility for ensuring that all the waste generated from the students leaving the premises is disposed of properly and legally. Leaving waste in the garden/ yard can result in a £2,500 fine. Illegally depositing waste on the street can result in a £50,000 fine and up to five years' imprisonment
Students and residents can also work in partnership with Leeds City Council to report landlords who commit any of the environmental crimes mentioned above.
Get involved and help
Green Streets is a group of students who aim to reduce the amount of waste, created by students, that goes into landfill sites. This is achieved by collecting any items which would otherwise be thrown away and redistributing them to charities, hostels, shelters and even students.
Green Streets will be collecting unwanted goods from the areas of Hyde Park and Headingley from 18th to 30th June. If you would like to get involved, from giving items that you no longer require to offering your time to sort through the collections or promoting the service, would be a great help to Green Streets.
