Green Streets is an award-winning student-led project, working in collaboration with Leave Leeds Tidy, whose aim is to minimise the amount of reusable waste students leave behind at the end of the year.
They collect any items (bedding, clothing, crockery, pots, pans, books, CDs, DVDs, non-perishable food etc.), which would otherwise be land-filled, and redistribute them to charities, hostels and shelters, and by holding several free shops over the summer. Last year, Green Streets successfully diverted over eight tones of reusable items from landfill, much of this was given to local charities and hostels.
Collection
- Collection bags - Green Streets 2009 will be delivering special red bags to every house in the area on the Change-Over Map at the beginning of June. Put all unwanted items in these bags and leave them out on the morning of the collection day for your area, after 9.30am to avoid bag slashing. If more bags are needed call 0113 380 1329.
- Collection Points
- Halls - Green Streets will be collecting from all student halls from the end of May until 5th June. There will be big containers around halls for donations.
- Shared Accommodation - Place your special red bags out on the street on the morning of the collection day for your area. (Use the Change-Over Map to find out your zone, and the collection timetable below to find out the date Green Streets will be collecting in your area.
If none of the collection days shown in the timetable below suit you, you can always drop bags off at your union reception or give us a call on 0113 380 1329 and, if they are passing, they will try to drop by.

Free Shops
All the stuff collected by Green Streets is sorted and placed up for grabs in free shops! The Green Streets free shops will be held in the following places:
- Riley Smith Hall, Leeds University Union, 10.00am to 3.00pm, 8th to 12th June and 29th June to end of July.
- Main Hall, Hawksworth Wood Children’s Centre, 10.00am to 3.00pm
And when we say free - we mean it! No money, no entrance fee, no trying to extract money from you as you head out the door with a sofa under your arm - free!
Items that don't get taking in the free shops are taken to charities, hostels and shelters.
Help with the Green Streets Project
Volunteer, donate, take away free items; students, landlords and local residents can all get involved with the Green Streets project.
Give away any reusable stuff you don't want to Green Streets.
Fill up the red bags, drop stuff off at the Union building, or place your items in the designated collection points at halls of residence. Green Streets will collect all this stuff and redistribute it, minimising the amount of waste going into landfill sites. See the timetable above for the Green Steets collection dates.
Volunteer with Green Streets.
There are loads of opportunities from helping to run a free shop, driving a van, to making reusable fashion. For more info email Green Streets at
