Green Streets is an award-winning student-led project, working in collaboration with Leave Leeds Tidy, whose aim is to minimise the amount of reusable waste that is left behind by students at the end of each year. Last year Green Streets won their third Community and City Pride award for best Recycling initiative.
The project collects any items which would otherwise be sent to landfill, and redistribute them to charities, hostels and shelters, and by holding several free shops over the summer. Last year, Green Streets successfully diverted over 21 tonnes of reusable, unwanted items.
You can give your unwanted items to Green Streets in a number of easy ways:
- Collection bags Every house in the shaded area on the Changeover Map will receive two red collection bags that can be used to leave all unwanted items out for collection. Remember to leave these bags outside your house after 9.30am on the collection day. Leaving them over night can mean they get wet, stolen or slashed; leaving the streets of Leeds in more of a mess. If you would like more bags then call 0113 380 1329.
- Collection Dates: Saturday 15th May, Saturday 5th June, Sunday 20th June, Sunday 27th June, Wednesday 30th June, and Thursday 1st July.
- Collection Points
- Halls - Green Streets will be collecting from most student halls from Tuesday 4th May. Look out for the drop off point in your halls, and leave your unwanted items there.
- Union Drop-Off Point - If you are unable to use either of these services, you can also drop you items off at Leeds University Union foyer from Monday 10th May.
- Collection Items - Greens Streets will collect the following items:
- Sealed non-perishable food within the use by date
- Stationery
- Cookware (pots pans, utensils etc)
- Crockery and cutlery
- Homeware (picture frames, ornaments, rugs etc)
- Bedding
- Clothes
- Non-damamged electrical goods that still work (lamps, printers etc) NOT COMPUTERS
- Furniture (providing that it has a fire safety lable if it’s padded)
- Toys

Help with the Green Streets Project
There are loads of ways to get involved with the Green Streets project. Volunteer, donate, take away free items; students, landlords and local residents can all get involved with the Green Streets project.
Give away any reusable stuff you don't want to Green Streets.
Fill up the red bags, drop stuff off at the Union building, or place your items in the designated collection points at halls of residence. Green Streets will collect all this stuff and redistribute it, minimising the amount of waste going into landfill sites. See the dates above to find out when Green Streets will be collecting.
Volunteer with Green Streets.
There are loads of opportunities from helping to run a free shop or driving a van, to making reusable fashion. For more information about volunteering with the project email
leaveleedstidy@luu.leeds.ac.uk.
Come along to the free shop.
And take something away!
